What is a Low-dose (LDCT) Lung Cancer Screening?

Lung cancer screening is a low-dose CT scan used to detect lung cancer and is a preventative annual screening, like a mammogram or colonoscopy. Because lung cancer typically has no symptoms until the disease has spread, studies have shown, screening patients at high risk can detect lung cancer early when it is most treatable. A low-dose CT scan can help find cancer early and  is the only recommended screening test for lung cancer.

Should I be screened?  

Take the assessment below to see if you are eligible and talk to your doctor to see if screening is right for you.

  • Are you between 50-80 years old? 
  • Are you a current smoker? Or have you quit in the last 15 years?
  • Have you smoked the equivalent of 20 pack-years or more?

  • If you do not meet the above criteria but feel you are at risk for lung cancer, talk with your doctor to see if screening or other options are right for you.

What are the risks?

Studies show that screening for lung cancer with low-dose (LDCT) in high risk patients reduces the risk of dying from lung cancer. In some scans spots may be found that turn out not to be cancer. These false positive results do occasionally occur and may lead to needing further imaging or other tests. How long does the exam take?

The exam is very quick and takes only 10-15 minutes. There is no prep, injections, or oral contrast required for this screening.

What happens after the scan?

After your scan, one of our fellowship-trained radiologists will interpret the images and make recommendations for any follow up care. Your primary care provider will be sent a report with the findings. They will share the results with you in accordance to their office protocol. If the results are positive you and your doctor will discuss next steps. She has worked in a number of settings, including hospital, trauma center, urgent care and out patient radiology. She prides herself in creating a great patient rapport with each patient she encounters, and her attention to detail in all aspects of her position.

The Lung Cancer Screening Patient Navigator will be your contact at Derry Imaging Center. She will provide resources and support, as well as be your liaison. The Patient Navigator is responsible for ensuring patients are educated in their screening process, relay necessary information to all providers involved in each patient’s care and a true advocate for each patient involved in the Lung Cancer Screening Program. The Navigator will verify a patients eligibility for the program, provide consultation and important resources and ensure follow-up care is in place, when necessary.
