What Is a Diagnostic Breast Ultrasound?
A diagnostic breast ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed images of breast tissue. It’s often used when something unusual is found during a mammogram or physical exam.
A screening breast ultrasound (ABUS) is a different type of exam and is designed as a supplemental screening to a mammogram for women with dense breast tissue. Learn more about Screening Breast Ultrasounds.
Diagnostic Ultrasounds are used to:
- Investigate suspicious findings – Helps clarify concerns from a mammogram or physical exam, like a lump or mass.
- Cyst vs. solid mass – Distinguishes between fluid-filled cysts and solid tumors, which helps guide next steps in care.
- Guide biopsies – Provides real-time guidance during a needle biopsy to collect tissue for further testing.
- Evaluate breast implants – Can detect leaks, ruptures, or other implant issues.
- Examine other symptoms – Used for issues like nipple discharge, skin changes, or to evaluate lymph nodes under the arm.
The radiologist will determine if you require supplemental screening via ultrasound based on the results of your mammogram. Should you require a breast ultrasound, a technologist from the Breast Imaging team will reach out to you promptly to schedule.
