Ultrasound – A non-invasive, safe look into the human body

Derry Imaging provides its patients access to all the ultrasound technologies available today. Always on the cutting edge, Derry Imaging was one of the first imaging centers in the area that began using this state-of-the-art technology. Our investment in the latest imaging services demonstrates Derry Imaging's commitment to our patients.
About Ultrasound Imaging
Ultrasound imaging uses high frequency sound waves to penetrate the body. A computer processes the returning "echoes" to create an image, similar to how a submarine uses sonar to detect objects. Ultrasound is used routinely to examine the fetus, abdominal organs, thyroid gland, the female pelvis, and blood vessels - both arteries and veins.
State-of-the-Art Ultrasound Technology
3-D & 4-D Ultrasound imaging has been available at Derry Imaging since 2004. 3-D ultrasound technology produces three-dimensional images that look amazingly life like. The image of the fetus on the right is an example of a 3-D ultrasound image. 4-D ultrasound imaging, also known as dynamic 3-D ultrasound, shows the image actually moving in real time.
Real-life applications of 3-D ultrasound have benefited unborn babies diagnosed with heart defects, cleft lip or neural tube defects such as spina bifida. The enhanced 3-D ultrasound imaging enables doctors to better visualize the abnormality, and in the case of an unborn fetus, develop plans about how the baby will be treated after birth.
Common uses for ultrasound:
- Viewing an unborn fetus.
- Examining many of the body's internal organs, including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, uterus, ovaries, kidneys and bladder.
- Evaluating the heart (called an Echocardiogram) and blood flow within arteries and veins (called Doppler ultrasound).
- Guiding procedures such as needle biopsies.
- Imaging the breast and guiding breast biopsies.
- Evaluating superficial structures, such as muscles and joints, the thyroid gland and testicles.
Additional ultrasound exam services available at Derry Imaging include:
- Gynecological ultrasound
- Pelvic ultrasound
- Sonohysterogram
- Peripheral Vascular Lab
- Foot Ultrasound
About the Exam
- An ultrasound study usually takes 30 minutes to complete.
- Ultrasound imaging can be performed safely on any patient, even pregnant women and small children.
- A sonographer, who is trained in the techniques of ultrasound imaging, performs the study. All Derry Imaging sonographers are registered and have added certification in all ultrasound specialties, such as obstetrical and breast imaging.

How do I schedule my ultrasound?
Your doctor will give you a copy of the physician order identifying the test(s) you need. Be sure to bring your physician order with you when you come for your test(s) as it contains information used by the technologist to set up your exam. Our billing department will also use this order to submit the charges to your insurance company.
